If you’re getting ready to go on a new garden venture, you need to prepare your soil to ideally house your plants. The best thing you can do in the soil preparation process is to reach the perfect mixture of sand, silt, and clay. Preferably there would be 40 percent sand, 40 percent silt, and 20 percent clay. There are several tests used by experienced gardeners to tell whether the soil has a good composition. First you can compress it in your hand. If it doesn’t hold its shape and crumbles without any outside force, your sand ratio is probably a little high. If you poke the compressed ball with your finger and it doesn’t fall apart easily, your soil contains too much clay.
If you’re still not sure about the content of your soil, you can separate each ingredient by using this simple method. Put a cup or two of dirt into a jar of water. Shake the water up until the soil is suspended, then let it set until you see it separate into 3 separate layers. The top layer is clay, the next is silt, and on the bottom is sand. You should be able to judge the presence of each component within your dirt, and act accordingly.

Some people believe that when the weather starts getting colder and the leaves start to fall, it is time to put away the gardening tools and wait until next spring to work on their garden again. Wrong. Winter is an important time to maintain your garden’s health and assure yourself a good crop for next year. You may think that might take to long to prepare your garden, but the truth is that it takes less than one day to prepare your garden for the upcoming winter.
When the nighttime temperatures drop to less than forty-five degrees Fahrenheit for more than four days in a row, or frost is forecasted for your area (usually around late October or November) you know its time to begin preparing your garden. You should begin by evaluating your garden design, check which plants grew well in the past season, and which plants did not do well. Fall is a good time to decide which plants will remain in you garden next year, and which ones should go.

When properly designed, pool landscaping can turn that so-so swimming hole in your backyard into your own private luxury vacation get-away spot. Despite what some landscapers may want you to think, landscaping a pool isnt something only the professionals can do. That said, you still need to invest a fair amount of time in planning to avoid costly mistakes. In order to get the gorgeous pool landscape you deserve with the fewest hassles, there are a few things youll want to consider.
Not all plants are pool plants
The types of plants youre going to have around the pool is something youll want to give serious consideration to. Choose the wrong plants and you could end up with leaves and seedpods in your water or, worse, roots growing through the wall.
When you spot a plant you think might look good around your pool, read up on it to make sure its truly pool-friendly. Better yet, look for a list of pool-friendly plants and use that to find species that will grow well in your area.

If you’re thinking about taking your gardening seriously and getting out there every day to increase the attractiveness of your garden, then you will want to get the right tools to help you in this. You might be tempted to go out to the store and just buy the nearest things you see, but you’ll be much happier if you put lots of thought into the styles and types of tools you’re buying. There are styles designed just for gardening, and you’ll be better off buying those.
You can find most of the tools you will need at your local gardening or home improvement shop. Usually the employees will be simply thrilled to assist you in finding the ideal tools. If you go to a shop that specializes in gardening, you can usually get some advice in addition to service. Gardening store employees are usually an untapped wealth of wisdom, and they are how I learned almost all that I know about gardening today.

Do you wish you could grow vegetables but you don’t have enough yard space? Maybe you should think about getting an indoor greenhouse. If you live in a condo or apartment, it’s easy to see the attractions of an indoor greenhouse. But even homeowners with large yards are attracted to the idea of an indoor greenhouse.
A real benefit is the lower expense involved. Even a simple lean-to greenhouse shed is more costly to build than a small indoor unit. It’s not that difficult to build a greenhouse in your own home with supplies that are readily available at any home improvement outlet.
Or maybe you want an indoor greenhouse, but aren’t interested in building one from scratch. Well, you’re in luck, because you can buy an indoor greenhouse kit. You can get these in various styles and brand names. You can get them at a department store, a garden center, or an online retailer.
Indoor greenhouse kits range from a tiny herb garden that you can keep on your countertop to a kit capable of turning your basement’s shelving unit into a hothouse.

There are various type of garden ponds that the house owner might enjoy to have in the household. Some man made ponds are elevated with a barrier that prevents the water from spilling over while others are excavated into the land and fit with the lay of the land. A garden pond is usually made as natural as achievable which means that the entire pool may be dug into the ground. Some other water features including waterfall and fountains may be added to the garden pond counting on the tastes of the home owner.
First Things First
A primary study must be done to see just how suitable a garden pool may be in the garden. There are many places that a garden pond may be deterred due to too much exposure to the sunshine or too closely knit to large tree roots. Tree roots can be detrimental for the pool bottom as these might grow and crack the bottom stimulating a leak or rip the liner.
The deepness of the garden pool should also be considered particularly if the house owner wishes to put fish in it. A little garden pool may need to be deeper if there are supposed to be Koi in it. Sunshine exposure can heat up the water supply and kill the fish if left alone.

It is very easy to make your rat his own hammock. All you need to do is to get a large piece of soft, fleecy material. This could be bought from a material shop very cheaply, or could even be from an old jumper or blanket.
Cut a square of the fleecy material. The size will depend on the size of your rats, but generally it is good to go for a larger size than necessary, so that your rat can really relax. An average size rat could have a nice large hammock using these dimensions:
30 x 38 cm (12 x 15″)
A very big rat could have an extra large hammock using these dimensions:
38 x 45 cm (15 x 18″). This size would also be good for ferrets. You then need to make a hole in each of the four corners of the material. Through these holes you can thread a sturdy piece of string and tie it onto the cage roof, or corner of the cage. When it is all secure place your rat into the hammock with some soothing words of encouragement. You will soon find that every time you look in the cage your rats are all piled up in the hammock snoozing away.

When it comes to finding the best indoor bonsai trees, you really need to be aware of what it is you’re looking for. In order for a bonsai to grow in the environment that you intend on placing it, you will need to know a few things to begin with. Aspects of the art of bonsai growing involve care, height, width, and shaping, which can be rather overwhelming if you don’t know what to do.
Listed below are some examples of the things you should look for before going out to purchase your very first bonsai plant.
Care Instructions
There are various kinds of care instructions involved with every variety of bonsai plants. This is one of the very first things that you should look at when selecting a plant.
Don’t overlook the importance of watering. If you think that you may well forget to water your bonsai plant once in a while, then it will be worthwhile selecting a plant that does not require watering as frequently as others. On the other hand, if you tend to over water plants, then select a bonsai that can cope with extra moisture.

Bonsai trees are miniaturized versions of the bigger trees. These bonsai trees are shaped into many different styles and forms to please the beholder. These variations enhance the beauty of the trees themselves. The pots in which they are planted in must also be correlated to the style the tree is trained to be. These styles are formal upright, informal upright, cascade, semi cascade, slant and windswept. These are the different types of bonsai trees available for shaping, training or forming.
Upright styles: Formal and Informal
Trees that are suitable for the upright styles of bonsai trees style are Pine, Larch, Juniper and Spruce. This is because they have trunks that are straight upwards and their first lower branches are far wider than the rest. The rest of the branches will then follow suit and shape an overall triangular look for the tree. This is a great shape for beginners to practice with. Lending the tree an impression of motion, the informal upright style is similar to the formal upright except that the top branch needs to be extended forward instead of upwards. The Informal upright types of bonsai trees style are suitable for Beech, Japanese maple and Trident Maple trees

Contrary to popular belief pet rats are not pets that you can just keep in a cage and forget about. They are highly intelligent, active, fun and very cute little critters. They need plenty of things to keep them occupied when you are not around. They enjoy playing with toys with you and on their own. It is also very important to have more than one rat, so that they can keep each other company during the day.
So here is your ratty shopping list. First of all we have the basics:
* Large rat cage. Make sure the gaps are not too wide, or your rat may decide to go walkabout.
* water bottle
* Food bowl and snack bowl (so you can separate sweet and savoury)
* Bedding (I use old newspapers and shredded paper from work).
* Rat Food - a basic cereal/block which you can then add tasty snacks to, to spice things up.
But here are some more exciting things for your rat:
* Rat hammock - Rats love to snuggle up in a bright, fleecy hammock. You can make one, or buy one.
