What makes flowers scent-sational?

Have you ever wondered why that lovely flower you’re holding smells good? Believe it or not, this is a natural mechanism that’s important to the plant’s survival.

We spray perfume on our bodies to smell good and attract members of the opposite sex. In a way, this is what flowers do.

Like humans, flowers need to reproduce or face extinction. They do this by producing pollen grains that need to reach other flowers. This is where pollination comes in.

Pollination is the process where pollen is transferred from one flower to another for the sexual reproduction of plants. This is accomplished in two different ways.

In abiotic pollination, pollination is done without the help of other organisms or pollinators. This is accomplished mostly by the wind (a process called anemophily) that carries the pollen to other plants. Another form of abiotic pollination is hydrophily or pollination by water which is common in aquatic plants.

Abiotic pollination occurs in only 20 percent of plants. Of that number, anemophily accounts for 98 percent of pollination while two percent is by hydrophily.

  • How To Grow Tuberous Begonias

They will be indoors a full month longer than they should be and during this time they will be struggling to make the right kind of growth. Leaves and stalks will be pale and weak and the plants will not be the strong, vigorous type needed to start the season outdoors. Tuberous begonias started to root about the first of March will be developing during more favorable light conditions: the days are brighter and longer in April when they will be making leaf growth.

Sometimes tuberous begonias are planted too early because they have started to sprout and this suggests to the grower that the tuber wants to start growing again, that they will suffer if not permitted to grow. The young, pink sprouts may appear early, due to the storage conditions being too warm, thus encouraging growth.

By keeping the tubers in a cooler place this can be prevented. Preliminary rooting before top growth is made is essential with tuberous begonias. This rooting period takes about 30 days. By then there are enough roots, the top has grown a few inches and potting should be done.

  • What You Should Know About Worm Farming

The process of worm farming or vermicomposting is the process of getting compost, vermicast or worm casting, waste, from organic matter processed by earthworms. By using worm farming we are capable of getting the best fertilizer that can help the soil in producing good crops and produce. Most of the requirements for worm farming are organic wastes so vermicomposting makes good use of waste and generates black, earth smelling humus.

Earthworms are the main workforce for creating humus where they and bacteria are the primary catalysts of the process. Other species like insects, other worms and molds also play an important role in the process the the most common earthworm used for this are the Red wigglers. This type of composting worm can be found of Europe and South America, where they are present in rotten fruits and vegetables along with compost and animal waste.

The kind of compost produced by the vermicomposting function is clean and organic but it also has high quantities of micro nutrients N, P, and K which are very important for the growth of plants. Among the provision of good nutrients it also environmental friendly, since it assists in energy recycling and besides the fact that it’s ecologically friendly, it’s not toxic and uses almost no energy for the process.

  • The History Of Roses

    Let’s Face It

We may as well face it, almost a century has passed since we dipped into Rosa X odorata (tea) blood and the modern rose passed into a new phase. The genes have been wound so many different ways from an ever increasing number of species roses. (Should you call me a hybrid Irishman” just because a remote ancestor named Dennis” came to America some 200 years ago, and his offspring intermarried into French, English, German and Welsh families?)

Where do the modern large flowered bush garden roses get their robust stems? Not from tea! Where do the sturdy big flowers come from? Not from tea! From whence do they get some cold resistance? Not from tea!

If we must single out some ancestor common observation would move us to use the name “hybrid gallica.” But this leaves us with the current problems. For in addition to gallica the modern roses have a fair representation of seven other major species roses in their genetic makeup.

  • You’re thinking about re-covering some of the floors in your home, and you’re looking for an inexpensive, but good-looking way to do it. You’ve decided that hardwood flooring looks the best, but it’s so expensive! Well, there’s another option available - Pergo Flooring. It looks so much like hardwood that it’s hard to tell the difference unless you’re an expert — but it costs about half as much as real wood.

In 1977, a small Swedish manufacturing company that made laminated tabletops came up with the idea of laminate flooring. The product was put on the market in Europe in 1984, and made its way to the United States ten years later. The demand for the new product was so great that Home Depot decided to carry Pergo flooring in all of their stores. It has now almost become a household word.

What is it about Pergo flooring that has made it the leading seller of flooring in the world? I think basically it’s because of its combination of quality materials, ease of installation, and worry-free maintenance. No matter which room you’re re-flooring, there’s a Pergo floor to suit. Pergo has more design patterns than any other brand. And its composition makes it moisture, scratch, and stain resistant. It’s also healthier because it doesn’t use any of the chemicals found in other types of flooring.

  • If you want to make the most attractive and beneficial use of your grounds, you’ll want to make sure you plan your landscaping very well. Most people take the idea of pathways, coverage, foliage and so forth for granted, having no idea how much thought and planning it requires to get it just right. Properly planning ahead is the key to having a great looking landscape.

You’ll want to consider several elements in your design, including access (walkways), lighting (if any), coverage, and color. One of the most often overlooked plants are trees, as they are not only to be incorporated in the beginning, but must be accommodated over time as they grow and take up more space and ad more beauty to the landscape.

Remember that trees have an annual cycle of growth, leaf shedding, flowering, and so forth. Some trees do this more than others, with evergreens shedding almost all year round and larger-leafed trees shedding all at once. Be aware of this and how it will affect your landscape’s overall look.

  • This is How to Take Good Care of your Lawn

Removing weeds is one lawn maintenance chore that most people cannot stand, getting down on the ground and pulling out weeds may not be your idea of a swell time, but it is necessary and will help keep your lawn looking its best. Weeds are like any other plant need sunshine and the right kind of nutrition-rich earth to grow.

Unfortunately weeds really are not aware when and where not to grow so they try to take over your grass by making their presence felt everywhere, even after using landscape fabric. You will also see weeds on the rest of your grass as well and while mowing can help, it will not get down to the root of the problem. This is when it becomes imperative to bend down and withdraw the weeds right from their roots.

The weeding action calls for some protective gear and these include gloves, hat, and a long sleeve shirt for taking shelter from the sun and a safeguard from handling any toxic plants, which might be lying there. Remember to carry a plastic bag to throw the weeds in to, or else the left over seeds may again attack the lawn. The weeds must be pulled out right from their roots, or else, they would tend to grow again. In case some weeds are especially tough to pull, you have to dig the ground around it and then re-try with revitalized force.
