Organic gardening is the practice of raising herbs, veggies, fruits, and other plants without having to use man-made pesticides or fertilizers. The central motivation is to work in harmony with nature to produce food in addition to flowers without adversely affecting the natural environment or our health and well being.
Organic farmers typically rejuvenate the resources that the vegetable garden depletes by conserving any organic resources produced. The result is a reutilization of nature’s resources.
One of the main features of an organically grown garden is that there isn’t any man-made pesticides or fertilizers used to help grow plants. The concept behind this is that the natural world is much healthier without these types of chemicals harming other living organisms (including ourselves).
You carry out organic gardening based on observation. For example, to determine if pesky insects are attacking your plants, you should take notice of the plant itself. Observe underneath the leaves, exploring the flowers, watching the stems… Find out what bugs are actually eating on your plants. After you observe the unwanted insects, you can educate yourself on what the best organic strategies of insect control are for that particular bug, virus, or fungus.

Unless you have a vast amount of land, you will never really be able to grow enough vegetables to be fully sustainable so instead of using pesticides and artificial fertilisers, why not try growing organic food. Chances are that you are only growing for fun but this is also much cheaper than buying organic food, for which there are many benefits.
Most people underestimate how easy it is to grow your own food free of any chemicals and pesticides using compost from recycled materials. Growing organically is safer for you, your family and the environment. You can produce your own compost very easily from over half your household waste. You can construct a compost bin from four wooden posts, some chicken wire and cardboard. Fill it with any wasted food, peelings and all sorts of paper.
Pick a small plot of land that gets the sun all through the year. Avoid being near buildings or fences as heavy metals, paints and chemicals can taint the soil and hinder growth. Move any debris such as rocks, get rid of any weeds by hand and move any wanted plants to somewhere else. Turn the soil so it is loose and allowed to absorb air and moisture.

Gaia herbs is an all natural organic herb company that believes in a quality product. They have a two hundred and fifty acre farm where all of their products are grown. They believe that the quality of land and the way that it is grown is essential to obtaining a high quality herb. Their farm is located in North Carolina and they do not use any herb not supplied by their farm. They stress pure plant medicine and the highest quality standards.
In the south western portion of the blue ridge mountains is where they have their farm and facilities. This is their main farm but they do have plans for another in Costa Rica. When this farm is done they will use it to grow the subtropical and tropical herbs that can not be grown here. Every part of their operation is organic and carefully watched over. They control every aspect of the production of their herbal products. They have even come up with a biodegradable packaging system.

Elements such as potassium and nitrogen can be given to plants in an easily assimilated way by means of an organic liquid feed. The feed can be chosen to be suitable for any deficiency suspected or just as a “tonic” for weak plants. As plants absorb nutrients anyway in liquid form,
the feeds will act quickly when applied to the leaves or roots.
The main method for preparing them is to suspend a nutrient rich solid held in a porous container inside a quantity of water. This is the method preferred for animal manures or compost. You can use a Hessian Sack or bag or even tights or a large sock. Lay a stick across the top of the container and hang the bag from it with strong cord then add water and cover. Stir every few days and it will be ready in a week or two.
The strength of the feed may vary with animal manure being weaker than chicken manure. As a rough guide drain off some fluid and dilute one part with forty parts water.

There are certain organic materials that work great as a garden mulch material. Some work better that others though, but sometimes you just have to use what is available.
As the mulch breaks down over time it will help to nourish the plants but it’s main goal is to shield the soil and to eliminate evaporation into the atmosphere.
A good store bought mulch may also help to stop weeds from starting. However a homemade organic mulch is probable where most of the weed seeds will come from. But if they are caught early they should not be difficult to deal with.
Straw is usually used and it is a very good mulch because it is porous and it allows moisture to pass through easily. It often comes in a compressed bale and it can be broken up to cover a large area.
It’s cheap and it can be used as an undercoating to a more attractive and costly mulch, not to mention that worms just love the stuff.
There different types of straw. Rice straw is one type and is available in the fall months. Often it is weed free and can be used instantly, but it deteriorates very fast.

Why does hoeing cause more weeds? Ever wonder why weeds can grow better than the vegetables your trying to grow. Part of the reason is that you are caring for your garden in a way which promotes weed to grow with abandon. When you turn the soil that is exactly what the weed need to really get a good foot hold and take off growing like “weeds”
In nature the soil builds a natural environment for plant growth, one that has worked for many thousand of years. The soil that has no structure is on top and when you turn it under and bring the soil that does have structure to the top you have disturbed the natural order of the eco system. This top layer is not good at passing nutrients to the vegetables roots. This is why traditional gardeners always need to fertilize there vegetables gardens. The Food Commission says “today’s farming does not allow the soil to enrich itself”.
The first problem is caused by turning the soil is that it helps the weeds to take hold and grow and then there is a chain of events of related issues. One of those issues is the soil doesn’t hold the water like it should and the nutrients are not as available to the vegetables as it could have been.

Burpee Seeds has been selling seeds and garden supplies since 1876. Farmers and home gardeners alike purchase their seeds along with retail stores and it all happens in the headquarters at Warminster, Pennsylvania. W. Atlee Burpee founded the company when he was only 18 and it only left family control for a short time when it was bought by General Foods in the seventies. It returned to the family in 1988 and is currently run by the son of the founder, David Burpee.
In 1888 Atlee began to experiment with seeds from Europe and tried to make them suitable to grow in the United States. He perfected Surehead cabbage and developed a better variety of carrot called Long Orange both of which are still sold today. He also developed the first green bean that had no string on the pod. He searched the country finding farmers and botanists that developed their own variety of vegetables and flowers
By the time Atlee died in 1915 the company was sending out over a million of its mail order seed catalogs a year. Most customers were farmers but home gardeners were starting to take notice and were requesting catalogs. They were also purchasing Burpee seeds at local stores and from mail order.

Fish emulsion is a liquid fertilizer made from fish residue. This is a liquid organic fertilizer that is good for plants and good for the environment. A common fish emulsion formula is made from the processing residue of menhaden, a small, bony fish from the Atlantic Ocean. Waste byproducts from other fishes, like wild salmon, can also be used to create fish emulsion fertilizers.
Fish waste is boiled to remove the oils and liquids. The solid wastes are removed and transformed into animal fodder and fish meal. The fish oil is taken off, and the liquid residue is cooked further to produce a thick suspension.
The unrefined emulsion is basic, so phosphoric acid is put in to make it more acidic. This process produces an acidic reaction, which serves as a stabilizer for the fish suspension. This important step is vital for the shelf life of the liquid fertilizer.
If you have a stable supply of fish waste, or you’ve a way of obtaining some from a local fishing port, you might want to think about making your own liquid fertilizer from the leftovers of processed fish.

If you are looking for free or cheaper organic materials to make use of as natural fertilizer, you need only to look at the things piling up in your own plot (leaves, droppings and manure to name a few). All the ingredients for an organic fertilizer system are obtainable to you if you look closely. Finding suitable organic material is a challenge you will take pleasure in, particularly in the fall when fallen leaves simply pile up ready to be turned into natural fertilizer for the coming of planting season.
All organic materials qualify as natural supplements. You simply need to process these to create a complete fertilizer containing all three of the main nutrient elements, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These minerals get liberated into the soil when the ingredients rot.
Animal manure is a natural fertilizer, but it has changeable mineral levels. Nutrient content varies according to the diet of the animal. In addition, pasture farmers are advised not to use any type of chemicals that could upset an animal’s diet to make sure the resulting compost is free from the same chemicals. These facts should guide you on how to moderate the dung you’re going to use as a supplement.

Organic fertilizer application has become very standard but when the whole organic thing began, individuals were not prepared to accept the notions of organic gardening.
Have you ever chanced upon the book, How to Have a Green Thumb Without an Aching Back, by Ruth Stout? In this 1955 book, the author revealed a unique method to produce garden crops. She told us you don’t have to plow your soil every year if you can learn how to mulch. Moreover, you don’t truly need to purchase synthetic fertilizers to create a beautiful garden. Most of what’s mentioned in the book are now popular methods for growing an organic garden. Back then, though, her neighbors thought her strategies were out of this world.
It is hardly surprising that individuals around us are still skeptical of organic gardening systems.
To some of us, even the term “organic” has become synonymous with hard work, hassle and impractical methods that don’t work. The situation reversed when individuals discovered organic food and how eating something that was grown and bred using only natural elements can save the lives of millions.
