The long historical use of herbs in medicine and the culinary arts is worth continuing today, so if you would like to establish a plot of your own devoted to herbs read on.

Design a plot

Think which plants you would like to have. What is your chief interests. Do you want to replant each year or grow perennials and biennials.

Can you fit the herbs into your present garden? You may need to consult expert books for data on the requirements and uses of the plants you are considering.

A paper plan is most important. You can then ensure that you will not be damaging some herb when removing shorter living ones at the end of the season. It is a good idea to keep the annuals at the centre of the bed and the others near the edges.

The plants must be positioned correctly so that they have enough room and light to grow well and are not obscured by taller varieties.

If you would rather keep herbs out of your garden (and some are quite invasive) you could have herb pots. These are large containers with three or more outlets for the herbs. Fill the pot up to the first outlet and plant it before continuing on with the filling and planting process. Usually, the herb that requires the most water is planted in the bottom hole, while the variety that requires the least, goes in the highest hole.

Possible Layouts

Stone or bricks can be used to either divide or border a square or rectangular bed. Paths also can be used to separate the sections. Wheel or ladder shapes might also be constructed sometimes using the real articles and planting between the rungs or wedges.

A lot of these plants prefer an alkaline environment. This can be allowed for in your preparation stage when you discover what care your herbs need. The propagation of herbs from seed will need you to follow the instructions on the seed packets for conditions of soil, temperature nad moisture.

It is not difficult to grow herbs if you have a fertile soil and ensure adequate drainage and watering. A good harvest results if minimum requisite conditions are met.
