Teak is used throughout the worl, from boat decking to garden furniture, but it is essential that it is taken from sustainable and managed plantations.

The FSC’s advantage over other government run schemes is its independence. It is not influenced by governments, forestry owners or producers unlike other notable schemes.

The FSC organisation not only ensures that all the teak certified comes from managed environmentally sustainable plantations, but also that the workers in those plantations have access to proper healthcare, education and safety equipment.

In addition, FSC certification ensures that governments are not able to over exploit their natural resource to their own financial ends; Burma (Myanmar) is a case in point, which is rich in teak, but has no FSC certified plantations.

According to John Duff, director of Garden Furniture Scotland Ltd, only two countries worldwide have FSC certified teak whih is suitable for manufacturing Garden Furniture. Mature teak is durable, However, many producers sell garden furniture made from immature teak which has both light and dark areas in the same piece of timber.
