With the help of pressure switch a constant pressure of around 20 to 60 PSI (pounds per square inch) is maintained inside the pressure tank. Due to this constant pressure, all the faucets and showers supply water with same pressure.

A water pressure tank is connected to submersible well pump. When the pressure of water pressure tank decreases, the submersible well pump is turned on to fill water in water pressure tank and increase the pressure inside it and when the pressure reaches the desired level, this submersible well pump is turned off.

If you do not have a water pressure tank installed in your house then the well pump is turned on and off every time you start a faucet. This reduces the lifetime of the well pump. Therefore, it is better to have a water pressure tank installed in your house.

Over the time water pressure tank may fail. It is either caused by the loss of air pressure in the upper half of the tank or the diaphragm fails. You can tell if this is the case by tapping on the tank. If it sounds like a dull thud both at the top and bottom then chances are the diaphragm has failed and a new pressure tank is required.

When you buy a water pressure tank then keep in mind the number of water fixtures in your home and the gallons per hour flow rate of the well pump. Based on these two factors choose the size of your tank.
