Many termite problems are caused by some poor decision making in your yard. There are a few mistakes made in the yard that invite termites to your home which ends up with damaged property. If you avoid doing these mistakes, you can help prevent termite issues.
One mistake that is made is removing the stump or the tree where there is a termite problem. The logic for most people is that if you remove this food source for the termites that the problem will go away. What happens when you do this is that the termites will move to another location which is most likely your house. You need to first kill the termites before removing any trees from your yard.
One thing that many people do is stacking wood next to the home. Most of the time this is done so you can quickly grab wood for your indoor fireplace without having to walk out into the cold too far. The wood against the house invites termites since it’s a great food source. They will eat the wood pile and eventually move into your home. Be sure to move the wood further out away from your house.
Avoid having wood structures touch the soil in your yard. This might be a wood shed, stairs, or most likely your deck. Your home is protected somewhat because there is a real foundation. Wood against the ground is almost perfect conditions for termites since they like moist soil and wood. Be sure to have protection for your wood in your yard by using sand barriers or concrete as foundations for these structures separating them from the wet soil.
If you think you have a termite problem there are a couple things you can do. The first is to get a termite inspection from a credible company. This will give you an idea if you have a problem or the potential for a problem. The other thing you can do is to get some termite stakes. These will be put around the home and pop up when termites have interacted with the baits in the stakes alerting you to a termite problem.
