The backup of contaminated water in the kitchen sinks is a commonly occurring problem in most households. The homeowners feel helpless in front of such an irregularity. The only thing they manage to do is to clear the said waste manually. However, the installation of an air gap can serve the required purpose with ease. The efficiency of an air gap cannot be ignored in the plumbing scenario.
Air gap is one plumbing component that can prevent the occurrence of such a phenomenon. The significance of such air gaps is well supported by the builders and plumbers.
If your kitchen sink doesn’t contain such a plumbing component then you can install one such unit. Most sink manufacturers provide precut holes on the sink’s body to incorporate any air gap component. If you are not able to locate a hole in your sink then you may have to bore a hole manually. A drill machine and a hole-saw would be of immense help while drilling a hole in the sink. The hole saw works on the bore made by the drill machine and makes it conducive for the installation of the air gap.
Visit a local home improvement store or a plumbing store to buy an air gap unit. It is always advisable to cut the hole with the dimensions of the air gap in mind. Misapprehension on that front could take a toll on the setup of the kitchen sink. Place the air gap on the hole and insert the screws in place. Tighten the screws using appropriate tools.
Cover the distance between the air gap and the dishwasher with the help of a hose pipe. Make sure that both the ends of the hoses pipe are secured tightly to the fixtures using the hose clamps.
A length of hose would also run between the larger nipple and the inlet nipple. Again, use the hose clamps to secure both the ends of the air gap.
Finish off the task by placing air gap cap on the final setting. Remove the cap to access the air gap unit when any irregularity is faced.
If you face any complication during the length of the project then avail the services of a plumber. He would also guide you with a proper course of action.
