I don't have much space for a garden, so I have a container garden. I regularly collect rainwater in large plastic flower pots (no drainage holes) for watering. This has worked great. So even if you do not have a lot of space, you can still modify the tip in the post to work for you.

This is so helpful for everyone, even those of us who do not live in a drought zone. This is just one way that we can conserve energy, and use our resources wisely! I am going to start collecting our rain water to use starting this spring! Thank you so much for this useful information!

This is a great idea. I bet the water bill savings are huge. I'm going to look into this for next spring. Thanks!

I have seen more elaborate rain collection system that connected all of the gutters on the house to a below ground pump in the back yard. In the back yard the home owner installed large cisterns that held something like 500 gallons. The pump would switch on when there was sufficient water coming off of the roof of the house and would pump the water into the cistern. Between the pump and the house guttering, he placed a leaf / debris catcher or filter.

The cistern was above ground. He installed a regular hose bib faucet at the base of the cistern. When he watered his garden he opened the faucet and used gravity to push the water out. In his part of the country they got around 35 inches of rain per year. He stated that he was able to water his garden most all of the time from the water collected from his roof.

I grew up in a rainshadow (the infamous Sequim, WA), and my mother's solution to the lack of water was a bit extreme: we instituted an entire grey-water recycling system in the backyard. It was a long time to set up, but it felt good knowing that we weren't washing all of our grey water into the watershed, but instead saving it for an unrainy day. :)

Great Topic!! I am using 6 barrels that the recycling company gave me for free! I think they might be 90 Gallons but it could be 55, I'm not sure. I hooked them up to my gutter drains in the back yard. A little unsightly, but great for watering my evergreens. Ask the trash or recycling companies first if they have any extras, cause they have a ton!! Thanks for the good read!!
