Roofs are very important part of our house so it becomes our duty to take good care of them. They require regular inspections so that they can stay for long.

Roof leaks can cause great problems in a home. But, many homeowners still allow their roof leak to continue causing extensive damage to the roof, ceiling, as well as creating health hazards. While a leaking roof is very damaging, most of them can be easily repaired.

Identifying the source of roof leak is the first step in repairing it. They usually occur frequently at places like skylights, chimneys, flashlights etc.

Roof leaks usually occur due to several reasons like poorly sealed vents, worn out or missing shingles, a low spot on the roof where water collects or it can be due to debris like leaves and branches. One must always look for leaks in the day time.

If a leak is recognized, clear the area of any home belongings (electronic equipment, furniture, etc). Place a bucket to collect the water for the time being. Once you can clearly see where the water is dripping from the ceiling, take a ladder and look at the roof in that area. You might easily see a part of the roof that has a broken shingle; you might also see debris, loose flashing, etc.

If the leaking roof is due to some debris material, you can easily stop it by cleaning that area. This is a quick fix for the situation, however, there might be some other problems too that should be fixed at the earliest.

If you see a missing or a broken shingle on the roof, the process of repairing it is quite simple. Replacing the worn out or damaged shingles should be enough to patch the leak and prevent it from coming back. One should make sure not to delay the process of replacing the damaged shingle as it can cause great problems later on.

If you are not comfortable enough with the roof repairing, you can always go in for a professional roofer. Also, make sure that you do not try fixing your roof in a thunderstorm.
